The surgeon will typically harvest one of three types of grafts: the saphenous vein from the leg, the radial artery from the arm, or the internal mammary artery from the chest wall. 4. Bypassing the Blockage

The next step is connecting the grafts to the coronary arteries. The surgeon carefully sutures one end of each graft above the blocked area, and the other end below the blockage, creating a new pathway for blood to flow. This allows the heart to receive oxygen-rich blood again, helping it function properly. In some cases, multiple grafts may be needed, depending on the number of blockages.

5. Closing the Incision

After the grafts are in place, the surgical team checks the heart's function and ensures there is proper blood flow through the new bypasses. The heart may sometimes be temporarily stopped during surgery, but it is usually restarted with the help of medication and electrical impulses if necessary. Once everything looks good, the breastbone is wired back together, and the incision is closed with sutures or staples.
